“Catherine and I both live on the coast and enjoy the lifestyle that it brings, so it seemed only natural that the Hygge:liv would be inspired by the environment, from the wide-open beaches to the rugged coastal landscape.
Partnering with local creatives and being able to support the local community has been something that was extremely important to us.”
Hygge is a Danish word that means cosiness and comfort, which was the driving force behind Hygge:liv created by Moggs Creek Stylist, Catherine Stocks and Jan Juc Creative Erin Hughes. Friends for over 16 years, with a mutual love of design and interiors, they came together in 2019 to create a luxe, one of a kind cushion collection, sourcing the highest quality unused fabrics, with a mission to reduce landfill.
As Erin explains “unused fabrics refer to the leftover materials collecting dust in textile mills and garments factories; abandoned after a large production run or discarded because the dye was the wrong colour, or is simply surplus fabric that is unsold and left in storage. Our eclectic and unique collection is handmade locally and developed in a sustainable, ethical and socially responsible way, with each cushion made from unused fabrics.”
Sold online, the cushion collection covers the themes Coastal, Botanical, Travel, Monochrome and Nautical. This is complemented by a small range of giftwear that includes handcrafted keep cups, candle holders and books that resonate with the brand’s philosophy.
The business has evolved along the way, as Erin and Catherine saw a much bigger picture to offer a customised interior styling service. They are now working closely with architects, designers and interiors stylists, as well as creating custom made products for their clients.
“We recognise that there isn’t a one-size fits all when it comes to interior styling, spaces are incredibly personal. It’s where you find a sense of comfort, warmth, familiarity and joy – exactly what “hygge” is all about.”
What made you decide to operate your business on the Surf Coast…
“Living here and identifying a need for an interior design service that focuses on using high quality and beautiful pieces. Re-purposing is always our priority, we have a minimalist approach to sourcing and designing that fits well with the style we create for coastal homes.”

“In our online store, it’s our cushion collection. In our interiors business, it’s custom designing unique collections for each client. Our interiors business is really unique in the sense that we look at the beautiful high quality existing pieces our clients have and re design or re purpose to make them new in spaces.”
